HELP FOR VIEWERS WATCHING TV OVER-THE-AIR
Installation of new digital broadcast antennas on Sutro Tower was completed in October 2009. For all television viewers that are not connected to cable or satellite, signal strength should be much better in all locations. You should be able to rescan all of your television sets or converter boxes to pick up new channels. Rescan instructions are below. You do not need to rescan if you are getting all the channels now.
Most viewers have been reporting improvements in reception. However, some viewers have reported that they have lost stations that they once had. Follow the simple steps below if you have lost channels.
Understand that most but not all Bay Area TV stations are broadcast from Sutro Tower. Some stations come from other locations. Here is a list of stations that are broadcast from Sutro Tower.
Station & Channel on your Digital TV
| KTVU 2 - 2.1 KRON 4 - 4.1 KPIX 5 - 5.1 KGO 7 - 7.1 KQED 9 - 9.1 KOFY 20 - 20.1 |
KMTP 32 - 32.1 KCNS 38 -38.1 KBCW 44 - 44.1 KCSM 60 - 60.1 KFSF 66 - 66.1 |
Note that some stations carry more than one channel now. These extra channels show up as 2.2, 7.2, etc. Individual stations will be making adjustments to power and will be optimizing their signals. Contact individual stations for more information if you cannot receive a certain station from Sutro Tower or other locations.
Channel Rescan Procedure:
Here is the basic rescan procedure:
- Press menu on your remote and choose the channel scan function.
- Your TV set or converter box will then find all the channels now available in your area.
- Don't forget to rescan the channels on all of your TV sets.
You might possibly have some luck by trying this "Double Rescan" procedure, too:
- Disconnect the antenna from the converter box or digital TV
- Rescan the converter box or digital TV without the antenna connected
- Unplug the converter box or digital TV from the electrical outlet for at least one minute
- Reconnect the antenna to the converter box or digital TV and plug the unit back into the electrical outlet
- Rescan the converter box or digital TV a second time to ensure that a “double rescan” takes place
Steps if You Have Lost Channels
1. Make sure you understand the location of Sutro Tower. The tower is located in the City of San Francisco near Twin Peaks. The antennas are mounted as high as 1800 feet above sea level. However, even with this height, it is not possible to serve all viewers in the Bay Area due to the terrain. Do your best to aim your antenna towards Sutro Tower.
2. Television signals basically travel in straight lines to the receiver. They cannot bend over hills or around buildings. Make sure your antenna is in the best spot possible to see Sutro Tower.
3. Make sure your antenna is designed for UHF and VHF. Two VHF channels are used for digital signals the San Francisco Bay area. They are KGO Channel 7 and KNTV Channel 11. However, only Channel 7 broadcasts from Sutro Tower. All of the other TV channels now broadcast on UHF. So, it is very important to have a good quality VHF/UHF antenna.
4. Signals can bounce around to get to your antenna. If you have problems receiving some stations, change the position of your antenna. If is an indoor antenna, move it to a new location and scan again. You might need to move the antenna several times to find a position that works for all channels.
5. If you have an outdoor antenna, again, you can pan the antenna left or right and try a rescan. It may require several tries with the antenna in different positions to find a location that works for all channels. Rescan after each time you reposition your antenna to see if you have found the best spot to point your antenna.
6. Ask neighbors and friends to help. If you do not have the ability to move your antennas around or are confused about rescanning, please ask a neighbor or friend for help.
7. Early generation TV sets and converter boxes do not work as well as the ones made today. If you have a TV set with a built in digital tuner or digital converter box that is over 5 years old, consider replacing it.
8. Finally, if you would like to report reception issues, please send us a note to: info@sutrotower.com. We may not respond to all e-mail, but we will keep a tabulation of the problem areas for our Engineers to evaluate. Please answer these questions when reporting reception issues:
- What is your location? A cross street is acceptable
- When did problem start?
- Are you using an Indoor/Outdoor Antenna?
- What is the make/model of receiver (if unknown, when purchased)?
- Have you tried a rescan?
- What channels do you receive?
- What channels did you used to receive that you no longer get?
- Do you occasionally get signal lock or is there no picture at all?
- What type of residence - single, attached, multiunit, floor
